El Greco ( 1541-1614) was one of the most famous painters of the renaissance developing a strongly mannerist style in contrast to the naturalist approches perdominant in Seville, Madrid and elsewhere in Spain The nobleman with his hand on his Chest is one df the Greco best know works.
It was painted in the early years of the artist stay in Toledo. It shows the exaggerated anatomical disproportions and the stylized figure that is characteristic in El Greco style .It illustrates the sober style of dress in spain at the time.
